Applique Techniques we Love Using, A Mini Tutorial

Block 1 of our new Applique Sampler Quilt. We have been using fusible applique using a machine blanket stitch. We love using batiks because of the dyed threads and the less fraying due to their tighter weave. Sounds good doesn't it. We have used one colour thread throughout (the background colour). We love how this works for us.
Sketchy applique using free motion techniques after fusing is also popular. We have tried using this method and decided we weren't happy with the fraying. We know this is also considered a feature of the sketchy look so this is our own personal choices. Makes for easier washing of your project later on.
Today we were using Superior Monopoly to applique long strips with a buttonhole stitch. This works fine too.
Then we had a lightbulb moment, what about combining the 2 methods. We anchor the piece to stop the fraying, and also get a visible stitch around the edge.

Don't like the visible holes from the Monopoly? Do a 3rd row of straight stitching.

If the 3rd row of stitching doesn't suit, how about making the cross bite into the fabric from the buttonhole stitch shorter using the Monoploy, and do only 2 rows of straight stitching. Hope you have enjoyed our Mini Tutorial.
